On 10 December 2002 in Astrakhan (the territory of the Southern Branch) the acceptance committee of OJSC Rostelecom conducted acceptance of the last facility of Russia-Kazakhstan fiber optic transmission line - the 2nd start-up complex in the village of Volzhsky – Astrakhan section.
The start-up complex is formed of the following line and station facilities: automatic switching center of long-distance national telecommunications in Astrakhan, a number of facilities located in Yashkul and Khulkhuta villages, a 10 KV electric power line, fiber optic transmission line interconnecting the national switching center to Astrakhan and OJSC Rostelecom access node at Astrakhan’s TV Center.
The new facility has a capacity of 79,98 thousand channel/kilometers and the length of 38,6 kilometers. Construction cost is estimated at 48,063 million Rubles. Placing in operation of the facility will enable establishing of digital communication channels and Internet connection at the access node in Astrakhan.
As Alexander Afanasyev, Director of the Southern Branch of OJSC Rostelecom was quoted as saying, the construction of the start-up complex will supply Astrakhan region, the only subject of the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation which had no digital communication lines, with reliable digital telecommunications, both long-distance national and international.
