Auditors confirm NLMK’s compliance with international environmental requirements

NLMK has successfully passed a recertification audit of its Environment Management System by TÜV CERT (Germany), the certification authority, for compliance with the requirements of ISO 14001-2004.

The scope of the audit included the inspection of the Company’s production activity and of its technical service operations, as well as current documents on environment management system. The auditors have confirmed that the Company meets its international obligations in terms of environmental protection. Over the course of the audit a positive evaluation was given to the Company’s environmental activity in 2007, as well as its environment-oriented programs which are to be implemented this year.

Based on the recertification audit results, it has been decided to extend by three years the NLMK’s certificate of compliance with the requirements of ISO 14001-2004 (Environment Management System).

For reference:
The Company first passed an independent certification audit of its environment management system for compliance with international standard ISO-14001 in 2002, one of the first Russian steel-making companies to do so. In 2007 NLMK became the winner of the All-Russian Competition "Environmental Leader of Russia - 2007". The Company was awarded the winner’s diploma at the 3rd All-Russian Environmental Conference, "New priorities of national environmental policy in the real sector of the economy". Within the framework of the Phase I of the Company’s Technical Upgrading Programme, between 2000 and 2005 NLMK invested RUR 3.4 bn into environmental activity. In 2007 the Company allocated more than RUR 1.5 bn for environmental projects of Stage II of the Technical Upgrading Programme. In 2008, the financing of nature-oriented programmes will amount to approximately 3 bn rubles. Between 2007 and 2011, NLMK plans to invest more than RUR 10 bn of capex into environmental projects at the Company’s Lipetsk site.
