MOSENERGO (TGC-3)

November 15, 2002

During nine months of 2002 AO MOSENERGO's power stations cut nitrogen oxide emissions

From January to September, AO MOSENERGO cut nitrogen oxide emissions by 7% in Moscow and 9% in the Moscow region as compared to the same period last year.

In total, hazardous emissions, including sulfur oxide, fuel oil ashes, fossil fuel ashes and nitrogen oxide, increased by 0.4% as compared to the same period in 2001.

As a rule, the main contributing factor to pollutant emissions is fuel burnt at power stations. The amount of burnt fuel may differ depending on seasonal factors and air temperatures, consumption levels as well as other factors.

To reduce pollutant emissions, AO MOSENERGO pursued special environmental protection measures. In 2002, AO MOSENERGO continued to equip stations with devices which are used to monitor nitrogen oxide emissions. AO MOSENERGO's divisions are now using cavity-monitoring equipment, modern fuel oil burners, pollution monitoring equipment, noise reduction devices, etc. Power stations have upgraded and conducted maintenance work on water purification units, fuel storage, transportation and heating systems that help to prevent fuel oil leaks.

Thanks to efficient measures improving the air and water ecology in Moscow, AO MOSENERGO has been substantially reducing pollutant emissions in recent years. The company has been successfully carrying out environment protection measures including the ones outlined in Moscow Government's ecological program for 1993-2010.
