17 February 2004, Moscow. According to the 2003 operating results, the number of the Public Joint Stock Company Moscow City Telephone Network (MGTS) payphones accepting bank credit cards amounted to 1000 units. In 2002, prior to the project launching, there were only 300 such pieces available at the MGTS payphone network.
"The credit-card payment of a call charge is very convenient, specifically for the customers using the public payphones infrequently. They will not have to look for a telephone card sales office nearby if they should make a call urgently. During 2004, we intend to bring the number of such cards up to 3000", Mr. Arkadiy Semyonov, Director of the MGTS Public Payphone Network Department, said.
In 2002, PJSC MGTS signed an agreement on the MGTS public payphone network acceptance of the bank cards with the United Credit Card Company (USC). In line with the Agreement, the PJSC MGTS public payphones will accept the following credit cards as a means of call charge payment: VISA International, Europay (Eurocard/MasterCard), DINERS CLUB International, JCB International, and CTB Card. The users are enabled to pay off all types of public payphone call, local, long-distance and international ones, with the bank credit cards. According to Mr. Semyonov, the public payphone currently remains the most reliable means of the urban telephone communication across the world, especially in the event of an emergency situation where the cellular phone traffic is overloaded.
