For the first time in the track record of Russia’s natural gas exports to Hungary an annual deliveries of gas to the country exceeded 10 bcm. The 2003 contract commitments to deliver Russian gas are ted 10,2 bcm.
Fruitful cooperation in the gas industry between Russia and Hungary over the past years based on strict contractual fulfillment speeded up industrial development of Hungary as well as intensified gas consumption in the residential sector and resulted in 75% gas share in the county’s energy mix. Hungarian counterpart, in its turn, was a diligent gas off taker paying for gas received timely.

Russian natural gas deliveries to Hungary started in 1975. Over the last 28 years of business relations the Hungarian Republic received some 146 bcm of Russian natural gas building up natural gas share in the counties energy pattern from 27% in 1980 to 41% nowadays. Russia proves to be the major gas supplier accounting for 80% of the total gas imports to the country.
Under the long-term contracts to 2015 about 195 bcm of Russian natural gas are committed to Hungary. Under these contracts natural gas goes through the Beregovoye gas hub at the Ukraine - Hungary cross boarder and the Baumgarten gas hub at the boarder between Austria and Hungary.
Gas supply commitments are mounting year to year and, beginning from 2001, total gas flow will rise as high as 11.5 bcm per year.
