Moscow, 21 July. In H1 2003, the power plants of RAO "UES of Russia" Holding produced 324.8 TWh of electricity, a 5.9% increase from 306.7 TWh in the same period of 2002. The electricity consumption in the country grew 4.9% to 451.1 TWh from the same period last year.
Heat generation by the companies of RAO "UES of Russia" Holding in H1 2003 increased 8.4% to 271.5 million Gcal from 250.4 million Gcal in the same period last year. Such increase in heat generation was due to the fact that in Q1 2003 the average outdoor temperature was 5 degrees lower than in Q1 2002.
The thermal power plants of RAO "UES of Russia" account for the bulk of the increase in electricity generation. In H1 2003 their output grew 9.3% to 268.7 TWh from 245.9 TWh. At the same time, the hydroelectric power generation fell by 7.7% from 60.8 TWh to 56.1 TWh.
The operation at the hydroelectric power plants was set in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation. The reduced electricity generation at HPPs was due to the forecast low water in rivers. For instance, the water flow through the HPPs of the Volga-Kama cascade during the spring flood was 10% lower than the long-term annual average.
Water reserves in the long-period storage reservoirs of the Angara-Yenisei cascade decreased 28% compared to last year. In H1 2003 the water flow in the cascade was 20% lower than the long-term annual average. In order to replenish the water reserves in the long-period storage reservoirs, the HPPs of the Angara-Yenisei cascade worked in off-peak operating conditions in April-May 2003. In June, in accordance with the instructions from the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, the HPPs of the cascade were switched to the mode of operation ensuring river navigation.
