Telasi Electricity Distribution Co. requests Georgia's energy regulators to postpone implementation of new tariffs

Moscow. 24 November 2003. Telasi*, the distribution company supplying electricity to Tbilisi, requested the National Energy Regulatory Commission (NEC) of Georgia to postpone the implementation of the new tariff system, which envisages differential electricity rates, until 1 April 2004.

Originally, Georgia's NEC had decided to introduce the differential rates in Tbilisi effective 1 September 2003. Depending on the electricity consumption, the tariffs would increase from the current 12.18 tetri to 16.8 tetri per kWh.** However, the new management of AO "Telasi", which took up its duties in September this year, succeeded in getting the implementation of the new system postponed until 1 December 2003.

Today, Telasi management say that the differential tariffs scheduled by the NEC of Georgia to go in effect on 1 December 2003 are not supported by any financial or economic assessments.

According to RAO UES Media Relations Department, AO "Telasi" ensures uninterrupted supply of electricity to consumers in full volume. The electricity is generated by Tbilisskaya TPP (Generating unit No. 9***) and transmitted from Russia via the 50 kV PTL "Kavkasioni". Russia has supplied 95 million kWh of electricity to Georgia since it resumed its exports to the Republic in October this year.

* controlled by RAO "UES of Russia"
** from 5.7 cents to 7.9 cents per kWh
