Anatoly Kruchinin, Severstal’s general director, emphasized that this step is continuing company’s efforts to improve Occupational Health and Safety Management system, which has been recommended to certification to OHSAS 18001:1999 by Bureau Veritas Quality International, which has conducted the preliminary audit at Severstal.
“We have set five goals for Occupational Health and Safety, and tasks to reach each one of them as well as organization and technical measures to fulfill these tasks. Costs to reach these goals and tasks in 2003 total 702,854,000 rubles,” said Kruchinin.
Pivotal goals include lowering the risk of operating equipment, risk from buildings, and increasing personnel understanding the requirements to occupational health and safety. 150 activities are scheduled which cost 424,135,000 rubles to achieve the first goal. They include overhaul of equipment and buildings repairs, carrying out recommendations for employee work organization, etc.
Expenses to increase knowledge on occupational health and safety run at 4,300,000 rubles. 1100 managers and line employees will be educated and evaluated. The company also intends to raise safety of the manufacturing process. Investments into 179 activities in that direction total 192,385,000 rubles.
Today the OHSAS 18001:1999 certificates are obtained by just several of Lukoil’s units. In the opinion of BVQI experts, Severstal’s system of Occupational Health and Safety meets OHSAS standards. It is well thought out and encompasses all spheres of the company’s activity.
