ALROSA implements OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains

April 8, 2020 - ALROSA implements OECD due diligence guidance for responsible supply chains of minerals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas. The company places special emphasis on ensuring compliance with the responsible business principles and disclosure of information on rough and polished diamonds produced by the company at all stages of its supply chain from exploration and mining to sorting, cutting, polishing and trading.

To improve the efficiency of this work and to implement international best practices ALROSA launched an internal diamond supply chain management system. The system is based on the Regulations on Responsible Diamond Supply Chain Management, approved by the Executive Committee of PJSC ALROSA on March 20, 2020. The Regulations reflect the requirements of the updated Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) Code of Practices and ensure alignment of ALROSA Group with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas.

The Regulations set forth the guiding principles of the diamond supply chain management system for the company, its subsidiaries and joint ventures, as well as for all potential suppliers of rough diamonds irrespective of their location. Implementation of an internal diamond tracking and traceability system in all the segments of the diamond supply chain will enable ALROSA to provide its clients with the information not only on the country of origin, but the region of origin of its rough and polished diamond production, and guarantee that rough diamonds produced by ALROSA Group in different regions are not mixed in the process of sorting, valuation, cutting and polishing, and trading.

Starting from end 2020, ALROSA plans to conduct regular due diligence of its diamond supply chain management system.

Tyler Gillard, Head of Due Diligence and Senior Adviser in the OECD's Centre for Responsible Business Conduct commented:

“The implementation of a comprehensive due diligence approach aligned with the OECD Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas is an important step for ALROSA. I am encouraged by and welcome ALROSA’s commitment to promoting best practices of responsible business conduct. I hope that these measures will contribute to the sustainable development of the whole diamond mining industry”.

Peter Karakchiev, Head of International Relations, ALROSA, said:

“As part of ALROSA obligations as a certified RJC member, we are very proud to launch our tailored diamond supply chain due diligence system. It marks the start of a process which we believe will positively contribute to ensuring that all ALROSA diamonds are produced in compliance with the high standards of the responsible business conduct.”
