Severstal to Invest US $161,736,000 Into Environmental Protection in 2002-2007

This was reported by Anatoly Kruchinin, Severstal’s general director, at the opening of the workshop for Severstal group’s managers on improving the system of environmental management and related environmental issues. The workshop was hosted by Severstal, which has set the standard for formulating the ecological policy of Severstal-group.

The workshop was attended by 40 representatives of various companies of Severstal-group, including chief engineers, environmental protection services’ managers and line employees of 9 companies from the steel-making, automotive and raw materials divisions.

“All companies present have their specific problems, and each business division differs significantly from the rest. However, we share the same principles and approaches to environmental protection. They are an important part of the Severstal’s corporate standard. First of all they concern the system of environmental management,” Anatoly Kruchinin pointed out in the opening address.

Severstal has developed such system back in 2001, ahead of Severstal-group, and has certified it to ISO 14001.

By the time of certification Severstal’s waste utilization was 90%, today this indicator is reaching 95%. It’s important to note that the plant utilizes not just the currently produced waste but processes old stocks of waste as well.

For example, today Severstal completed utilization of hips of steel smelting slugs. They are being processed and then reused in road construction. Further on, Severstal is able to close off its water circulation network to 98.2%. This allowed to reduce waste disposal into water reservoirs by 2.2 times.

Alexander Stepanov, Severstal’s technical director, made a report “On common policy in environmental protection”. Alexander Archipov, Severstal’s chief environmental protection officer, gave of speech on main activities in the field of environmental protection. His speech was reflected upon in the presentations of managers and line employees of the Severstal’s Industrial Safety Unit. They spoke of air and water reservoirs protection and utilization and processing of waste.

Another report was made on improving Severstal’s System of Environmental Safety according to ISO 14001. This topic was of interest to the companies of Severstal-group, which are in the process of preparing to certification of their environmental management systems to international standards. These companies are Cherepovets Steel Rolling Plant, Uliyanovsk Automotive Plant, Karelsky Okatysh.
