Gazprom hosts Scientific & Practical Conference dedicated to 50-year anniversary of UGS facility construction in Russia

Today Gazprom has hosted a Scientific & Practical Conference dedicated to the 50-year anniversary of underground gas storage (UGS) facilities construction in Russia.

The Conference Theme: UGS Facility Construction & Operating Experience and Development Prospects up to 2030.

Attending the Conference were representatives of Gazprom and its subsidiaries, ArmRosGazprom, Beltransgaz, WINGAS GmbH, Latvijas Gaze, Naftogaz Ukrainy, I.M. Gubkin Russian State Oil & Gas University and other organizations.

Opening the plenary meeting, Bogdan Budzulyak [Member of Gazprom’s Management Committee and Head of Gazprom’s Gas Transportation, Underground Storage and Utilization Department] summed up the major results of UGSs construction in Russia and addressed their development prospects up to 2030.

In particular, Bogdan Budzulyak noted that the existing network of Russian UGSs was an integral part of the United Gas Transmission System (UGTS). Located in prominent gas consumption provinces, UGSs allow Gazprom to shave both seasonal gas consumption disproportions and UGTS peak loads.

Touching upon the UGS development prospects in Russia, Bogdan Budzulyak said that commercial gas reserves and maximum daily send-out were the most crucial features of UGSs performance. By the start of the 2005-06 autumn-winter heating season, commercial gas reserves in Russian UGSs and UGSs maximum daily send-out accounted for 62.6 bcm and 568 mln m?, respectively. By 2010 and 2030 said parameters should grow to 72.6 bcm & 758 mln m? and 110 bcm & 1 bln m?, respectively.

The key note speeches presented at the Conference included: The Role of UGSs in Stock-Piling Strategic Gas Reserves within UGTS of Russia; UGSs in the Volga Federal District. Engineering & Operating Experience; Geophysical and Geochemical Methods of Control over UGSs Construction and Operation: Experience, Improvement Options and Cost Reduction and other speeches.

All the key note speakers pointed to a special role of UGSs in providing high operating reliability for Russia’s UGTS.

Summing up the results, the Conferees expressed a common opinion that Gazprom’s projections to further improve the UGS network were fully in line with the domestic gas industry’s strategic priorities.

Reference:

On 12 September 1955, the USSR Council of Ministers issued the Directive ?1673 making the underground gas storage issue a challenge of national significance. On 17 September 1955, the USSR Oil Industry Ministry issued the Order ?552 specifying the targets, scope and term of prospecting for UGS facilities.

First commercial gas was injected into the aquifer-built Kaluga UGS facility in August 1959.

Gazprom counts on a manifold UGS network comprising 24 gas storage units built in aquifers and on depleted gas & condensate fields.

The UGS network allows Gazprom both to shave seasonal gas consumption disproportions and provide separate Russian constituents with winter-time gas supplies from UGSs only.

Gazprom is intent on boosting the overall capacity of UGSs by debottlenecking existing and constructing new facilities.

The annual dynamics of commercial gas reserve growth throughout the RF UGSs is presented below:

 - 1998 – 45 bcm;

 - 2004 – 62.5 bcm;

 - 2010 (forecast) – 82 bcm;

 - 2030 (forecast) – 110 bcm.
