North-West Telecom

May 8, 2007

OJSC North-West Telecom has completed the construction of the St. Petersburg – Pskov fiber-optic line

In April 2007, North-West Telecom has completed the Luga-Gatchina section of the fiber-optic line in the Leningrad Region, thus finishing the construction of its own high-speed transport network in the direction St. Petersburg – Pskov*.

The Luga-Gatchina section was constructed in 6 months. North-West Telecom’s new 139 km-long fiber-optic line passes across the south of the Leningrad Region with many settlements and a well-developed transportation network.

The completion of the Luga-Gatchina fiber-optic line is an important event not only for the company, but for the Leningrad and Pskov Regions as well. The fiber-optic line will help improve the quality of local, intrazonal and inter-city connections, ensure a high-speed Internet access. In the future, thanks to the fiber-optic line the NWT subscribers will be able to use such rapidly developing and promising services as IP-television, video on request etc.

The Luga-Gatchina fiber-optic line is part of the NWT fiber-optic infrastructure serving as the base for the creation of a unified interregional multi-service communications network uniting the network’s central unit in St. Petersburg with regional units at all branches of the Company. The creation of such network will make it possible to bring modern high-speed communications services from St. Petersburg to the remotest points of the North-West Federal District of Russia.

At present, NWT’s own fiber-optic line with the capacity over 23 million channels per km covers all centers of the regions and republics in the North-West Federal District and over 70% of district centers.

* Formerly, NWT rented communications channels on the Luga-Gatchina section from other operators.
