RUSAL launches first Russian-made 300 kA cell at Sayanogorsk smelter

Moscow, December 11, 2003 – RUSAL, a world leader in aluminium production, today launched its first, high-capacity Russian-made cell at the Sayanogorsk aluminium smelter (RUSAL Sayanogorsk). The new 300 kA (kilo-ampere) electrolytic cell is expected to set new standards for power consumption and longevity.

The electrolytic cell is the basic production unit within the aluminium smelting process. It is a large carbon or graphite lined steel container, where aluminium is extracted from alumina though an electrolytic reduction process by a flow of high-amperage direct current. The new Sayanogorsk cell offers extremely high electrical efficiency (93%), power consumption of less than 13,800 kW/h per tonne of aluminium, and an extended life span of five years.

The new cell was developed by specialists from the RUSAL Engineering and Technological Center, the All-Russian Aluminium and Magnesium Institute (VAMI), metallurgists of the Sayanogorsk smelter as well as local construction and assembly firms. It took 12 months to complete the project, which involved an investment of about $5.8 million.

Cells used currently at RUSAL Sayanogorsk are rated at 175 kA, 190 kA and 255 kA. They were installed 20 years ago and currently work at higher capacities than originally rated. However, they have all reached practical capacity limits. The new cell design matches capacity ratings equivalent to those available from equivalent international designs.

According to Valery Matvienko,  RUSAL’s Deputy General director, Production,  “During construction of the cell, we used the best domestic developments and ideas of scientists and metallurgists as well as international experience in this area. We now have most powerful Russian-built cell in the industry, which will be able to produce 2,050 kg of aluminium per day.”

Later this month, four additional cells of the new type will also be put into operation. After pilot operation,  the new cell type will be put into industrial production and will be used at new production facilities as well as in modernization of existing facilities.

About RUSAL

RUSAL, a world leader in aluminium production was formed in March 2000 from the merger of a number of the largest smelters and other aluminium producers located in the CIS. The company accounts for 75% of Russia's primary aluminium output and 10% of the global primary aluminium output. RUSAL is a fully vertically integrated company with a complete production cycle from bauxite mining and the production of raw materials, to the production of primary metal, semi-products and aluminium-based end products. RUSAL is headquartered in Moscow.

About RUSAL Sayanogorsk
Sayanogorsk Aluminium Smelter (RUSAL Sayanogorsk), the newest and most state of the art aluminium plant in Russia, was originally built in 1985 in the Republic of Khakassia, in southern Siberia. It is one of the top three aluminium manufacturers in Russia with an annual capacity of 410,000 tons. The smelter accounts for more than 11% of Russian output and about 1.5% of the world's total output.
Sayanogorsk is LME registered. Sayanogorsk was the first aluminium smelter in Russia, which received ISO -14001 Environmental Management certification and ISO-9001 Management quality certification.
