Saratov distribution grids branch prepares for the thunderstorm season

The branch of IDGC of Volga, PJSC (a member of Rosseti Group) – Saratov Distribution Grids, is implementing activities aimed at successfully passing the forthcoming thunderstorm season.

Power engineers conduct inspections of all substations, fuel and lubricants storages, oil facilities and antenna-mast structures. Particular attention is paid to the compliance with the requirements of regulatory and technical documentation of lightning protection systems, stand-alone and portal lightning conductors, substation isolation, grounding devices of electrical equipment and structures.

The connection of the valve-type arresters, disconnected for the autumn and winter season, is being conducted. Their visual inspection and testing is preliminary conducted. For the purpose of locating faults on overhead power lines (OHPL), the readiness of emergency events recorders, fixing devices, and oscilloscopes installed at substations is assured.

Engineering inspections of sections of overhead power lines are conducted, during which the condition of overhead ground-wire cables and their connections, the condition of grounding devices, supports and braces, insulation are checked. On the 6-10 kV OHPL with XLPE insulation, the protective devices against wire burns under the influence of lightning overvoltage are checked. Taking into account the local climatic conditions on the OHPL with atmospheric ice melting schemes, it is planned to recover the grounding on the overhead ground-wire cables. Additional briefings and emergency drills with the operational staff are conducted to determine the locations of faults on overhead power lines using fixing devices.

Qualitative preparation for the thunderstorm season, conducted in strict accordance with the requirements of normative and technical documentation, is one of the most important conditions for the stable operation of the power grid complex and reliable power supply to consumers during the thunderstorm season.
