A working meeting between Alexander Ryazanov, Deputy Chairman of Gazprom’s Management Committee and Dzhurabek Nurmakhmatov, Energy Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan was held today at Gazprom’s Headquarters.
The meeting addressed the implementation of a bilateral Agreement on strategic cooperation.
In particular, the parties debated exploration and production of natural gas as well as upgrading and modernization of existing and construction of new gas transmission facilities in the Republic of Tajikistan.

On 15 May 2003, Gazprom and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan entered into a 25-year Agreement on strategic cooperation in the gas industry. The Paper fixes the following directions of cooperation:
- Exploring, developing and operating fields in the Republic of Tajikistan, including under the Production Sharing Agreement terms
- Technically developing fields, overhauling and commissioning non-operational wells
- Constructing, upgrading and operating gas pipelines and other gas infrastructure facilities located in Tajikistan and rendering maintenance services
- Processing, transmitting and marketing gas while implementing joint projects
Geological resources of the Republic of Tajikistan are estimated at more than 863 bcm of gas and 36 million tons of gas condensate. Tajikistan’s key resources (90-92%) are concentrated in the south of the Republic, in the Tajik-Afghani Trough.
Tajikistan’s commercial natural gas reserves account for 29.1 bcm and 1.26 million tons of gas condensate.
The Republic annually extracts some 40 million tons of gas.
Tajikistan’s natural gas needs average 1.2 bcm per annum, including 620 million cubic meters consumed by the industry and 550 million cubic meters, by the population.
