RUSAL announces modernization for ARMENAL

Russian Aluminium (RUSAL), the world’s second largest primary aluminium producer, has announced plans for modernization program of foil-rolling production at its ARMENAL plant in Armenia. The program’s aim is the creation of full cycle production and quality improvements in the plant’s product range. The program will be launched in late 2003.

It is intended to create full production cycle by putting into operation the units of direct rolling mills and by complete modernizing of hot rolling mills. The leading foil rolling equipment will be provided with the control systems and the automatic management systems. Outmoded high and low pressure hydraulics systems will be replaced by the modern ones. It is also proposed to modernize lubricant vapors accumulation system and to install the modern fire-fighting system.

Ultimately, this program will allow RUSAL to switch to production of 6-9 micrometer foil by the year 2005. This type of foil is most in demand in the Russian and international markets and will allow a potential 50% increase in profitability. RUSAL is conducting a tender for this program among leading engineering companies. Results will be announced in September.

Alexander Burdin, Deputy General Director, who is in charge of the RUSAL packaging business, said the modernization program will help Armenal to launch high level products. This will lead Armenal to take its place among the leading international foil producers.

Cost of the program is currently estimated at $34 mln. The program will be accomplished within the framework of RUSAL investment commitment to Armenian government. To date, total RUSAL investments in ARMENAL have amounted $41.3 mln (from 2000 to 2002).
