MOSENERGO (TGC-3)

April 21, 2004

AO MOSENERGO opens “birds season”

It is time for bird breeding in the Moscow region. AO MOSENERGO has taken measures to prevent bird-related accidents at power facilities.

Each spring, big birds such as crows and rooks cause considerable inconvenience for Moscow power specialists when they nest on high-voltage lines and sub-transformers. Nesting near high-voltage facilities is dangerous for the birds themselves and may disrupt power supply.

AO MOSENERGO’s branch Special Technology Design Bureau for High-Voltage and Cryogenic Equipment (SKTB VKT) runs a division that has been studying this problem for many years. AO MOSENERGO’s specialists analyzed the habits of birds that most frequently die as a result of the electrical impact. Jointly with ornithologists from the Moscow State University and the Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Animal Morphology, SKTB VKT has developed and implemented a number of bird-repelling technologies. Presently, AO MOSENERGO is using a comprehensive technique based on visual, mechanical, acoustic and electrical repelling methods.

Bird-deterring methods help both to safeguard the equipment and preserve the population of many rare birds some of which are registered in the Red Book. The nature-protecting actions of AO MOSENERGO are of interest for environmental organizations. For example, two years ago jointly with Taldom National Park (Crane Home), AO MOSENERGO specialists developed and implemented a program for crane protection. SKTB VKT intends to continue cooperation with environmental organizations to protect birds from electrical impact.
