KamAZ

August 16, 2003

The 15th of August. The 5th lap of “Rally Orient – Kappadokia 2003”

The duet of the trucks, piloting by Vladimir Chaghin and Ilghizar Mardeev, didn’t leave any chances to their rivals to “retrieve their losses” of previous laps of “Rally Orient”. The rash finish of white-blue KamAZ trucks, with the difference in time less than a minute, strengthened their leading positions even more.

MANN of Philippe Jacquot, which was lost in the dust from the wheels of KAMAZ trucks, finished in 36 minutes after Chaghin’s truck.

Almost 600 km, that was the distance of the 5th lap of rally around Kappadokia, the large region in the central part of Turkey. The main feature of this lap was two high speed sections around built-up areas Urgup and Ihlaru. The extension of the first was more than 300 km with all “delights” of the local landscape. Narrow stony roads in mountain ranges, surrounded by forests, endless plains between mountains, passages, in canyons, salt lake and volcano…The second high speed section was a little bit less than 5 km, at the very end of the lap, near Urgup; it passed along the dusty, plain route, covered by breakstone. The director of rally Rene Metj promised an unforgettable show to the army of fans and automobile amateurs, who occupied all local hotels. And the second high speed section turned out to be exactly just like this: short, sprint, captivating rush of the quick sport rally caravan to finish.

37 motorcyclists, jeeps and trucks ,out of 50 participants of the 6th lap of the rally-raids World Cup 2003,started at the 15th of August.

The closest persuader of KamAZ trucks, the French crew of Philippe Jacquot on MANN,has lost more than 49 minutes in the forest mazes of high speed route because of the yesterday’s errors of the navigator, so MANN started, losing almost an hour and 50 minutes to Chaghin. SCAM of the German pilot Gerhard Walcher, which was created in the best atelier of Germany, fell sick after 4 days. Yesterday its turbocharger has broken. The mechanics did their best to bring it round, but in vain, it stayed immovable in the camp in Urgup. Technical breakdown cooled the ardour of RENAULT truck, piloting by Jean Pierre Lapert. He has lost more than 24 hours to Chaghin. Today, after the fist high speed area, the Frenchman “put out a flag”: the military supplies of wheels were drained and he was not going to take the risk of the chassis. The only thing left was just to reach finish without haste, having saved ambitions. The mad fight with KAMAZ trucks of V. Chaghin and I. Mardeev during the first days of race has exhausted the vehicle and the crews of the rivals. But for KAMAZ –Master team its not easy to be the leader. But this fact just confirms the truth: only the one wins auto rallies, who, having the perfect engineering, possesses also a crew of the highest level of training: professionally, physically and morally.

So, before the last lap of “Rally Orient –Kappadokia 2003” Vladimir Chaghin strengthened the position of the leader even more. On the second place was KamAZ of Ilghizar Mardeev, who was 46 minutes back his team mate. The French crew of Philippe Jacquot on MANN truck was losing almost 2 hours 30 minutes to the leader. It was the only crew in the truck class, strong enough to compete with KAMAZ trucks along the whole Turkish rally.
