Andrey Ryumin: Climate change is having an increasingly profound effect on the operation of the network complex

In the framework of the SPIEF business program, the session "The Future of Power Industry. Energy Transition" was held by the Association Global Energy. Alexander Novak, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Andrey Ryumin, Director General of PJSC Rosseti, international experts and leading scientists, and the heads of energy companies have attended the discussion. The key topic was the assessment of challenges and opportunities in the context of climate change and the growing demand for carbon neutrality.

In his speech, Alexander Novak drew attention to a balanced approach that has to be developed in order to determine the strategic priorities of the industry in the new environment. "The energy transition is inevitable, but the speed of transformation depends on many factors. Most importantly, we should focus on energy security, so that the industry could meet the growing energy needs of people – it is estimated that global consumption will increase annually at a rate of up to 1%. Russia has a clear state economic and energy policy in place aimed at both the development of traditional energy and the use of new sources," Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation said.

Andrey Ryumin noted the importance of the climate agenda for the network complex. "It is safe to say that the climate change is having an increasing impact on our work. In recent years, we can see that winters are getting much warmer and summers are getting hotter on average. The biggest load on the network used to be in winter and now - in summer, especially if we speak about the south of the country. Additionally, abnormal weather events are becoming more frequent. We understand that this problem calls for strengthening our system," Director General of Rosseti said.

The network complex is not an emitter of greenhouse gases, yet the emerging technologies can make processes more energy-efficient and minimize the impact on the environment. As an example, Andrey Ryumin cited the use of modern composite materials at power facilities, the production of which emits less CO2.

Rosseti FGC UES is one of the founders of the Association Global Energy.
