The Gazprom Headquarters hosted a working meeting between Alexander Ananenkov, Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee and Harufumi Mochizuki, Director General of the Natural Resources and Energy Agency, Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry.

In the course of the meeting Alexander Ananenkov and Harufumi Mochizuki addressed the progress with the execution of the Agreement of Cooperation entered into between Gazprom and the Japanese Natural Resources and Energy Agency as well as issues dedicated to the fulfillment of agreements reached in December 2007 between both organizations at the second meeting of the Joint Coordinating Committee in Tokyo.

The parties paid special attention to the prospects of interaction within the Eastern Program, including to issues related to sci-tech cooperation as well as gas processing and chemicals facilities creation in Eastern Siberia.

Reference:

With scarce domestic energy resources, Japan is the world’s fourth-largest country in terms of energy consumption. The country annually consumes some 80 bcm of gas, the share of which totals 13 per cent in the national energy basket and is to be further increased. Japan imports 100 per cent of overall gas consumed in the form of LNG and is the world’s top LNG importer.

Gazprom and the Natural Resources and Energy Agency of the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry of Japan signed a Framework Agreement of Cooperation on November 21, 2005. The Agreement determines the major directions of bilateral cooperation in the gas sector. The Joint Coordinating Committee was set up with the aim of implementing the Agreement. The two meetings of the Committee were held in 2007.

The September 3, 2007 Order by the Russian Federation Industry and Energy Ministry approved the Development Program for an integrated gas production, transportation and supply system in Eastern Siberia and the Far East, taking into account potential gas exports to China and other Asia-Pacific countries (Eastern Program). Gazprom was identified by the Russian Government as the Program execution coordinator.
