In spite of cuts in state financing of road construction in 2002 Severstal shipped 146,000 of crushed stone to road construction companies located in various Russia's regions. Crushed stone was produced from blast furnace and steel smelting slags at the grinding and sorting device in the Severstal's slag handling shop. Crushed stone, produced as a result of waste processing, was shipped to Vologda and Yaroslavl regions for use in regional and state roads repairs. Overall in June Severstal intends to ship 155,000 tones of crushed stone to road construction companies, which is a 12,500 tone increase over June of 2001. Severstal-made crushed stone was used in the large construction projects, such as the junction at the point of exit of Cherepovets, the highway Cherepovets-Sergiyev Posad, the highway Vologda-Vitegra-Medvezhyegorsk, the bridge over Sukhona river in Sokol, etc.. In recent years, Severstal significantly increased the geographic scope of its by-products deliveries. Besides customers in Vologda and Yaroslavl, Severstal ships by-products to Kostroma, Nizhny Novgorod and Tver regions. The company management believes that by processing waste the company is making a significant contribution to the environmental protection. In February 2002, the grinding and sorting device Gercules, which was a turn key project of SKJ (Finland), processed a 5,000,000 tone of industrial waste. Waste processing leads to freeing of large industrial areas, which will be used as grounds for construction of the fifth grinding and sorting device. This will allow to utilize slag without preliminary storage. It will also enable Severstal to produce fraction stone, which is in high demand in road construction and production of mineral wool and other materials for the construction industry.
