The competition Young Manager of 2002 which took place among companies of the Severstal group was held in April 2002 at Kolomna Diesel-locomotive-building Works, a Severstal subsidiary in Kolomna, Moscow region. This is the first time the competition embraced all companies of the Severstal-group. Fifteen teams, representing various Severstal divisions and subsidiaries, took part in the competition. Most participants are former winners of the like competitions in their respective companies in 2001 and 2002. The corporate competition was held with aim to offer young managers opportunities for self-actualization, to select the most talented young managers, to create the talents pool, and to build a unified approach to development and evaluation of managerial staff. During the competition employees responsible for working with youth received special training by Severstal training center and strategic planing department. Three Severstal managers representing the Severstal team - the winner in the first corporate competition - received 20% salary raises by a decree of Alexey Mordashov, Severstal's general director. Special bonuses were also given away to the team of managers, representing Severstal Steel Mill production units. The second place in the competition was taken by ChSPZ (Cherepovets Steel Rolling Plant), the third place - by the Kolomna plant's team, the fourth place was taken by Olkon (Olenegorsk Mining Plant), the fifth - by UAZ (Uliyanovsk Automotive plant).
