MOSENERGO (TGC-3)

October 20, 2003

AO MOSENERGO upgrades a turbine and generator at CHP-22

AO MOSENERGO's specialists began to upgrade the turbine block at the power plant in April. The obsolete turbine and generator at power unit 8 have been in use for more than 35 years. The power unit was stopped and the equipment was dismantled in one and a half months. Today, AO MOSENERGO installs new high-tech equipment that meets the requirements of the modern power industry.

The Company plans to complete the installation of the new turbine before the end of November. Its capacity exceeds the capacity of the old turbine by 10% and equals 110 MWt. As a result, the average consumption of equivalent fuel will fall by 5% and the plant will become more environment-friendly. The higher capacity will also make it possible to generate more power in peak load periods in Moscow.

AO MOSENERGO will install a unique Electrosila-made air asynchronous generator at the plant, which does not have an equivalent in the world. This unit will be used to regulate the reactive power in the Moscow power system.

Generators produce reactive to ensure the stable operation of electric motors. Presently, the Company produces more reactive power than it consumes, which leads to overloads in electric grids and negatively affects the reliability of the power supply. The asynchronous generator will help the Company to consume more reactive power and ensure safer levels.

The installation of the new generator is part of the new large-scale RAO UES program aimed at the introduction of automatic regulation of the reactive power in the Joint National Electric Grid. Generators like these will be installed in some regional grids in the future.

On October 30, AO MOSENERGO's specialists will start to install the generator. All works should be completed within one month. In December the Company plans to hold comprehensive tests of the new turbine unit. After that, the unit will be put into operation. The project will cost $30 million.

The turbine unit upgrade will be a major prerequisite for successful survival of the winter loads peak.

CHP-22 is the biggest power plant in the world and operates both on solid fuel and natural gas. CHP-22's installed capacity amounts to 1,290 MWt. The power plant supplies power to the Southern-Eastern districts of Moscow (Orekhovo-Borisovo, Kuzminki, Lyublino, Vykhino, Veshnyaki), the town of Dzerzhinski and most villages and towns in the vicinity of Lyubertzy.
