MMC Norilsk Nickel has announced an open tender for consulting services regarding the development and installation of an integrated system of quality control and ecological management in accordance with international ISO standards 9001:2000 and 14001:96. The winners of the tender will be announced in June 2003.
The installation of the management system is scheduled for completion at MMC Norilsk Nickel's head office in Moscow and at Kola MMC in the Murmansk region by 2003 – 2004 and at the Polar division in the Krasnoyarsk region by 2005.
In line with the Company's production strategy until the year 2015 approved by the Board of Directors in March 2003, significant reductions of the environmental impact are planned by means of the modernisation of enrichment and smelting facilities. As a result, it is expected that atmospheric emissions of sulphur dioxide (the main waste product) at the Polar division will be reduced by 70 per cent from the present level by 2010. At Kola MMC pollution is expected to be reduced by more than 90 per cent by the middle of 2006. Simultaneously, MMC Norilsk Nickel is planning to install a technology for the purification of salts’ sewage, allowing to reduce fresh water consumption, to implement the system of closed water circulation and to eliminate sewage completely in the Taimyr Peninsula. |
