Some day the State Committee will commission AO MOSENERGO's Zagorsk GAES. Thus, the construction of the only water-accumulating power station will be over. This power station carries out the special task of balancing the daily power consumption in the Moscow power system.
The first stage of Zagorsk GAES was commissioned in 1987, then in 2000 AO MOSENERGO commissioned the last sixth 200 MWt unit. After it was commissioned the power station started to operate to full capacity. At the last construction stage, AO MOSENERGO had to build the infrastructure including the renovation work in the internal area, drainage and auxiliary buildings.
Today, all construction works at Zagorsk GAES have been completed.
Zagorsk GAES is crucial for the normal operation of AO MOSENERGO. The plant helps to optimize the power consumption within AO MOSENERGO's system as the day-time consumption tends to exceed night-time consumption.
Zagorsk GAES's operation in many ways resembles the work of hydro plant. The difference is that GAES's units can work not only as generators but also as water pumps. At night, the units pump water to the upper storage thus consuming the excessive power. At peak consumption the units generate power to cover the peak load, as the water from the upper storage flows down.
In accordance with the Program for Future Development of the Power Industry in the Moscow Region until 2010, AO MOSENERGO plans to increase the capacity of Zagorsk GAES by 840 MWt.
