17 August, 1998 - LUKOIL President Vagit Alekperov met in Moscow August 15 with Aivars Lembergs, the mayor of the Latvian port city of Ventspils. The two men discussed a project in increasing the throughput of the oil terminal in the port. Latvia wants LUKOIL to join the project.

Alekperov praised the thorogh work done in drafting the project and said that the talks on this issue must be continued. The company will send its personnel for an in-depth study of the project. An understanding was reached that senior managers of LUKOIL would visit Ventspils in November 1998 to see for themselves what the project team had done. Alekperov noted the strict adherents to their commitments and high professionalism of the Latvian Ventspils oil port personnel in handling the goods.

On the other hand, he said, LUKOIL is thoroughly studying other projects of exporting its products to the West, in particular the Baltic Pipeline System and the Druzhba (Friendship) pipeline and other pipelines crossing Russia.
