MOSENERGO (TGC-3)

September 13, 2002

AO MOSENERGO repairs electric lines, liquidating consequences of peat fires

Since the beginning of the week, services for high-voltage and distribution grids of AO MOSENERGO have repaired 13 out of 23 damaged electric lines in the Moscow region. Currently, the power is still cut off at 10 aerial electric lines. The repair work will continue on weekends. The administration of Noginsk, Shatura, Kolomna and Northern grids are taking part in district fire-fighting emergency commissions, which have been set up to help resolve various problems

Falling trees and burnt wooden pylons have resulted in the rupture of electric lines. Whole lines and lengthy parts of them are out of operation. However, despite numerous break-ups, AO MOSENERGO has ensured that all population centers near epicenters of the fires are fully supplied with power. AO MOSENERGO's branches are using reserve lines to supply power to consumers on a continuous basis.

As of today, AO MOSENERGO has rebuilt five burnt wooden pylons for 110 kV lines in Lukhovitsy area. The line is expected to become operational by the evening of September 13. Two aerial 10 and 110 kV lines are still disconnected due to extensive damage. Despite fires in the area having been practically extinguished, wind gusts have caused burnt trees to fall, tearing the electric lines.

The situation is still unstable in Noginsk, Orekhovo-Zuevo and Pavlovo-Posad areas. Some 27 fires have been registered along routes of electric lines, as well as numerous line ruptures. AO MOSENERGO is swiftly repairing the break-ups. The reconstruction of two 110 kV lines going through Orekhovo-Zuevo and neighboring districts may take up to two months. AO MOSENERGO has allocated the necessary funds for these purposes. The company has contracted construction companies and logger teams.

At present, AO MOSENERGO has repaired two aerial 35kV lines. Due to continuing fires four 110-220 kV lines and two 10 kV lines are still disconnected. The repairs on these lines cannot start until the fires are completely extinguished and the territory is cleaned. According to Nikolai Yudin, director of Shatura Electric Grids, tree blockages are so huge, that special vehicles are needed to clean the area. The management has already requested these vehicles from the local fire-fighting emergency commission.

Looters have aggravated the situation resulting from the peat fires. In Shature district looters have stolen around 1,200 m of aluminum wire.
