MOSENERGO (TGC-3)

February 23, 2001

Another stage of HPP-17 reconstruction was completed in January 2001

Another stage of HPP-17 reconstruction was completed in January 2001. The HPP-17 chief engineer S. Bantsevitch announced today that in accordance with the program of increasing efficiency and reliability of HPP-17, two high-pressure heaters had been exchanged at turbine No.1. This change has provided more efficient power generation: from now on 12 g less per capita fuel equivalent is spent to generate 1 kWh of electric power.

This program was launched last year when HPP-17 experts put into operation the first new-type 50MW generator in Russia. The old generator unit, which had seen 50 years of continuous service, was exchanged for the newest and most efficient module of this type. It is equipped with relay protection and air cooling system in contrast with the previous hydrogen-based one, which, considering the hazard of hydrogen explosion, makes the unit's operation more reliable. The unit has a fully automated control system. MOSENERGO experts in cooperation with ABB Cheboksary developed the new generator's design. Elektrosila plant in St.Petersburg manufactured the generator while TsRMZ, HPP-17, Apogey K, MOSENERGO Spetsremont, and Energoteploisolyatsiya installed and assembled the new unit. The unit began operation on December 20, 2000.

This year MOSENERGO plans to perform the following repair and maintenance operations at HPP-17: to exchange low-pressure rotor of the T-75 type at turbine 4; and for 2002 they plan to exchange the old turbo-generator No.3 of the VK-50 type for the PT-32-8 turbo-generator. The Leningrad Machine-building Plant will design and manufacture the turbo-generator. The exchange of VK-50 at No.3 turbine for the PT-32-8 will enhance general reliability and environmental cleanliness of the plant's operation.

"Activities on enhancing reliability and efficiency of HPP-17 operation help to ensure the stable supply of power and heating to customers," Bantsevitch said.
