At a meeting held at Gazprom’s headquarters, the Board of Directors considered the information on Gazprom’s gas saving initiatives and commissioned the Management Committee to keep working within the framework of Gazprom’s 2004-2006 Energy Saving Program.

Gazprom’s core gas saving initiatives: implementation of high efficient engines (in the gas production sector) and advanced gas compressor units; reconstruction of gas transportation facilities (in the gas transportation sector); gas flow rate measurement improvement; gas losses reduction (in the gas distribution sector).
Gazprom’s policy in energy saving has already brought fruits. In 2002, the Company reduced gas losses by 2.48 bcm; economic benefits from the implementation of energy-saving initiatives amounted to RR 769.45 million. In 2003, 2.6 bcm of gas are expected to be saved.
According to Gazprom’s 2004-2006 Energy Saving Program, the Company will save 13.7 million tons of fuel equivalent including 11.2 bcm of gas, 1,792.7 million kWh of electric power, and 1,365.7 Gcal of heat energy.
Gazprom’s normative documents envisage for the maximum collaboration in the gas saving sphere. This activity is effected under Gazprom’s Regional Policy Concept calling the Company to supply gas to Russia’s rural areas and meet regional energy needs.
According to the Russia’s Energy Strategy for the period up to 2020, the gas share in the primary energy consumption pattern is expected to decrease from 50% in 2002 to 45-46% in 2020.
