Severstal

October 1, 2002

Alexey Mordashov is taking part in the III International Business Summit - Business Development in the CIS: WTO - an instrument or a goal per se (Evian, France)

The summit's participants will discuss the CIS countries' accession into WTO as well as its consequences for national economies and key industries: energy, machine-building, car-making, stock-markets, banking, transportation, metallurgy, insurance and others.

"Today Russian businessmen have an opportunity to participate in shaping government's position on important economic issues. It is important to us to keep in touch with our colleagues from the CIS countries, because many problems are easier solved with help of all members of the business community," said Alexey Mordashov, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Severstal, who also heads the work group on WTO and customs policies of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

According to Mordashov, this applies to settling current trade disputes among some CIS countries as well as developing common approaches to accession into WTO. "Today CIS countries are at various stages of cooperation with WTO. Kirghizia, Georgia and Moldavia have already joined WTO, while Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Armenia are in the process of negotiations on joining WTO. It's essential that we coordinate our positions on accession to WTO in order to support one another in multilateral negotiations". In Alexey Mordashov's opinion, not only the political good will of presidents of the CIS countries but a constructive dialogue of CIS businessmen is required to achieve this goal.
