OJSC North-West Telecom has presented the results of its participation in the national project “Education” in 2006

During the implementation of the priority national project “Education” in 2006, OJSC North-West Telecom provided internet access to 1 741 educational institutions in the North-Western Federal district of the Russian Federation. This exceeds the planned number of schools that was estimated earlier as 1 704.

Within the project “Education” in 2006 internet access was provided to 177 educational institutions in the Arkhangelsk region and Nenets Autonomous District, 170 institutions in the Republic of Karelia, 161 in the Komi Republic, 224 in the Vologda region, 112 in the Kaliningrad region, 238 in the Leningrad region, 196 in the Murmansk region, 133 in the Novgorod region, 253 in Pskov region and 77 in the city of St.-Petersburg.

In 2007 OJSC North-West Telecom together with OJSC “PTKomm.RU” will continue to adhere to their commitment to provide internet access to educational institution in North-Western Russia.  High-speed access to educational online resources will be provided to more than 1400 schools in distant and hard to reach areas of the federal district.

The importance of the "Education” project has been repeatedly underlined by the heads of the regional educational institutions and the experts of the OJSC North-West Telecom. Today the Internet is an essential tool for modern quality education. The access to World Wide Web will help the students to extend their knowledge and to acquire new knowledge, while teachers will be able to find necessary information, share experience with colleagues and improve the level of teaching.

The project of providing internet access to educational institutions is implemented by OJSC PTKomm.RU (PTKOMM), which provides to educational institutions 24*7 unlimited internet access until the end of 2007.

According to the agreement with PTKOMM, the “Education” project is implemented in the North-Western Federal district in partnership with OJSC North-West Telecom. OJSC North-West Telecom is responsible for virtual communication channels from educational institutions to the regional PTKOMM access nodes with access speed of no less than 128 kbit/s, around the clock provision and maintenance of these channels, installation and setup of the end user equipment in schools.
