AO MOSENERGO is a major Russian utility, which inevitably affects the environment. However, 95% of the company's fuel balance is represented by gas, which minimizes the production’s negative impact on the environment. To preserve a stable ecological situation in the Moscow region, AO MOSENERGO pursues an environment protection program developed by the Moscow government for 1993–2010. For many years, the company has been implementing a number of its own efficient environmental measures.
Today AO MOSENERGO occupies a leading position by maintaining high environmental standards in the region. AO MOSENERGO's TEZ-27 was named the best ecological power station in Russia. The level of pollution is lower than the minimal required level. AO MOSENERGO personnel undergo continuous ecological training at the Center for Preparing and Re-Training of Specialists in "Power Ecology" at the Moscow Power Institute.
Throughout 2002, AO MOSENERGO did not violate environmental standards. In addition, the company managed to reduce pollution as compared to 2001. The level of hard substance emission decreased by more than 5%, nitrogen oxides – by 0.5%. At the same time, weather conditions and load levels recorded last year caused higher fuel oil and fossil fuel consumption. As a result, sulphur oxides increased 13%, but this figure does not exceed the required standard.
In compliance with water basin protection measures, in 2002 AO MOSENERGO cut the consumption of fresh water for technical purposes. In general, last year the company used for production purposes 7.2 mln m3 of fresh water (in Moscow – 6.5 mln m3). AO MOSENERGO also purified 6.2 mln m3 of drain water polluted by oil products. The company collected and re-used around 400 t of oil products.
To ensure the stable operation and minimize the impact on the environment, last year AO MOSENERGO focused on upgrades. The company introduced pollution control equipment to monitor air and water emissions. The company has installed new low toxic equipment at power stations. To prevent leaks of liquid fuel, the company repaired fuel tanks at power stations. AO MOSNERGO has installed on major flow and water lines equipment for monitoring water quality. The company used cavitation technologies to protect fish by driving them away from water in-takes.
In 2003, AO MOSENERGO will continue to improve environment protection. First of all, the company is going to upgrade its main equipment. AO MOSENERGO will install a new water purification system for cleaning water from oil products, introduce noise protection devices, install new cavitation equipment and introduce new control equipment.
