Moscow, June 27, 2008. On June 12, 2008 the sixth international golf tournament INTER RAO UES Cup will take place in Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
According to the tradition the cup will take place on the court of Astana golf club. Professional players will participate and represent political and business elites of Kazakhstan, Russia and other countries. However, this year golf professionals will also partake: during personal and team contests golf professionals and amateurs will complete individually by the tally of strikes – 18 holes.
Team classification will also be there: teams will be composed of one professional and three amateurs. Team contests will be based on the tally of strikes – 18 holes – the two best results will be accounted (out of four) per one round without handicaps.
Famous golfer Alexander Walter Barr nicknamed Sandy Lyle (Scotland) will take part in the tournament. Sandy Lyle was born on February 9, 1958. He started playing golf when he was three, and represented Scotland in his high school years at amateur tournaments. In 1975 and 1977 won the Cup of England among nonprofessionals.
In 1977, Lyle became a professional golfer and decided to represent Scotland at golf tournaments. In 1985, he won the Open Championship and became the first Briton winner since Tony Jacqueline who had won this championship in 1969.
Lyle is known to his fans for his sand strike from the 18th hole in the final round of the 1988 Masters when he became the first Briton to win the green jacket.
Sandy Lyle headed the Order of Merit of the European Tour in 1979, 1980 and 1985. Nine times he was in Top 10 of the Golf Official world rating – from 1979 to 1992. He was also a member of PGA tour for several years and became the seventh in the 1988 prize list.
Lyle is famous as a cool and tranquil player. His achievements had inspired such golfer as Nick Faldo and Yen Wusnam.
INTER RAO UES Cup is a one-day event. The contestants will be awarded with medals and trophies. The grand prize among amateurs is an automobile.
