Electricity supply for 2014 Winter Olympics to be reliable and of high quality. Sochi’s first Olympic electric facility commissioned ahead of schedule

Today, April 28, 2010, the first Olympic electric facility, Rodnikovaya 110-kV Substation, was launched in the resort city of Sochi. This electric grid facility became the first one completed under the Program for the Construction of Olympic Facilities and the Development of the City of Sochi as a Climatic Health Resort approved by Russian Government Resolution No. 991 of December 29, 2007.

IDGC Holding is supposed to build and rehabilitate 15 electric supply facilities for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in the operational area of Kubanenergo.

The launching ceremony was attended by senior executives of IDGC Holding; IDGC of South; Kubanenergo; the Krasnodar Territory Administration; Kuban Legislative Assembly; municipal entity of the City of Sochi; and Olympstroy, a state-owned corporation.

At the launching ceremony, IDGC Holding Deputy Director General Aleksey Sannikov said, “The Substation was rehabilitated and put into operation 6 months ahead of schedule. There is a certainty that all of the electric grid facilities under the Olympic Program will also be commissioned on time.”

Rodnikovaya Substation is among the key facilities in the Sochi electric power district. It is of great social importance for the resort city. The Substation supplies electricity to consumers in one of Sochi’s largest district—Makarenko; several industrial entities—a meat-packing plant, Russian Railways Trade Yard; social facilities; and elements of urban infrastructure, for example, Sochi Water Treatment Plant.

The rehabilitation of Rodnikovaya Substation included installation of state-of-the-art power equipment meeting international standards. This guarantees adequate reserve capacity for uninterrupted and high-quality electricity supply for both customers in the Sochi electric power district and the construction and operation of new Olympic facilities.

In addition, the rehabilitated substation will supply electricity for the construction of a two-level road interchange in Sochi. This electric facility will ensure reliable electricity supply for Sochi’s unified automated traffic control system.

According to the Kubanenergo investment program, the total investment in the rehabilitation of Rodnikovaya Substation exceeded 225.5 million rubles.

Given the great social importance of the Substation for Sochi customers, the rehabilitation process was carried out without turning the facility off. During the process, maximum comfortable conditions were created for Rodnikovaya Substation’s customers in terms of uninterrupted electricity supply.

After the launch of Rodnikovaya Substation, a working meeting was held with the participation of senior executives of IDGC Holding, IDGC of South, and Kubanenergo to discuss the progress of construction of Olympic facilities.
