North-West Telecom

July 24, 2008

OJSC North-West Telecom has completed the construction of the Kaliningrad-Zelenogradsk-Pionersky-Svetlogorsk-Yantarny-Baltiysk-Svetly-Kaliningrad fibre-optic ring and opened a new digital telephone exchange

On 23rd July 2008 the official opening of the intraareal transportation ring that had been built by OJSC N.W. Telecom and united towns of the western coast of Kaliningrad Oblast into a single communication network was held in Yantarny settlement. Yantarny settlement was the place where the construction of this intraareal ring was completed on 21st July. This is the first of the three planned rings which will embrace the entire Kaliningrad Oblast with optic fiber. Here in Yantarny, a new digital telephone exchange Si-2000 for 1024 numbers has been built and has replaced the former analogue 800-numbers telephone exchange.

The ceremony of opening the intraareal transportation ring and the new digital telephone exchange was attended by:

- Vice-premier of the Government of Kaliningrad Oblast Yu. S. Shalimov,

- Minister of Infrastructure Development of Kaliningrad Oblast A. S. Rolbinov,

- Head of the Yantarny Town District Municipal Unit A. L. Blinov,

- General Manager of OJSC North-West Telecom V.A. Akulich,

- Regional Director – Director of the Kaliningrad Branch A. A. Kulazhenkov,

- Regional Directors – Directors of all branches of OJSC North-West Telecom, who gathered in Kaliningrad for holding a meeting of the Coordinating Council of the Company.

A. A. Kulazhenkov, Regional Director – Director of the Kaliningrad Branch, stressed that "the fibre-optic communication line will lay a solid foundation for further economic development of the coastal health-resort area of the region. Now residents of the towns embraced by the ring will be able to use the extensive possibilities of up-to-date telecommunications – both the new quality of telephone communication and constant access to required information in the Internet. The intraareal communication ring offers a challenge to our corporate clients, too – this is an opportunity of creating own networks and using the advantages of digital technologies for business, which will make it possible to attain a better management level and reach new heights."

-----------------------------

The intraareal communication ring of the SDH level STM-4 191 km in length has connected 7 settlements of the coastal health-resort area of Kaliningrad Oblast. The throughput of the line is 622 Mbit/s. The intraareal fibre-optic ring will improve reliability of telephone communication , too, which is reached through 100% backing of the intraareal communication channels (in case of any failure at any section of the ring, bypass communication will be ensured on the other half of the ring).
