North-West Telecom has summed up intermediate results of fulfilling the Agreement of Cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Karelia

On 25th July 2006 a meeting took place between  S.L.Katanandov, Head of the Republic of Karelia, and V.A. Akulich, General Manager of JSC North-West Telecom in Petrozavodsk. The results of fulfilling the Agreement of Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Karelia and Joint-Stock Company North-West Telecom signed on 7th December 2004 were summed up during the meeting.

Both parties have noted the most important results of joint work, a high level of mutual understanding and shown interest in further development and deepening of cooperation on a long-term and sustainable basis.

In his speech the Head of the Republic expressed satisfaction with the results of cooperation with JSC North-West Telecom and stressed the need of further development of telecommunications in the region, having noted that:  "Business and investment badly needed by each entity of the Federation come only to the places where telecommunications come."  In his turn, V.A. Akulich confirmed that "JSC North-West Telecom will consider the issues of investment in the development of telecommunications of the northern territories of the Republic".  

For the time that the Agreement has been in effect, the Karelian branch of JSC North-West Telecom has used about 300 million roubles of investment.  By July 2006, the number of basic telephone sets in Karelia reached almost 215,000 and the telephone density amounted to more than 78 sets for 100 families.

For the same period the Karelian branch of JSC North-West Telecom has implemented the following projects:

  • Commissioned a digital telephone exchange with the capacity of 3000 lines in the town of Suojarvi, and the digitalization of the district reached 100%. 
  • Built an intra-areal fibre-optic transmission line 64 km in length – Pryazha – Suojarvi.
  • Commissioned a digital telephone exchange with the capacity of 1576 lines in the district centre Kem'.
  • Connected 44 venues of the Northwestern Bank of the RF Savings Bank to the multiservice network.
  • Put into operation a Clients Servicing Centre built according to the latest standards in Petrozavodsk.
  • Expanded the telephone exchange and line capacity in 10 towns.
  • Arranged a multiservice network in all districts of the Republic.
  • Provided a priority access to telecommunications for all veterans and the disabled of the Great Patriotic War in Karelia.

In March 2006 the Karelian branch of JSC North-West Telecom was awarded the Diploma of the Government of Karelia "The Best Organization of the Republic of Karelia (for the results of its work in 2002-2005)".
