RAO UES companies maintain reliable power supply to consumers despite hot weather in Southern Russia

Moscow, 10 August 2006. The energy companies of RAO "UES of Russia" maintain reliable power supply to consumers despite the adverse weather conditions in some areas of Central and Southern Russia.

The areas are experiencing unusually high temperatures, up to +42 C?, which causes increased electricity consumption as extensive use of air-conditioning puts strain on power grids and oil filled equipment of transformer substations.

In such conditions, the subsidiaries of RAO "UES of Russia" which are part of OAO "Center and North Caucasus IDC" and OAO "Caucasian Energy Management Company" (OAO "KEUK") have taken extra measures to ensure reliable power supply. The energy companies have further increased their control over the operation of transformer substations, and are monitoring the condition of cables in cable ducts, and analysing the current levels in transmission lines in order to prevent wire sagging which may lead to short circuits and loss of power to customers.

These measures have helped avoid serious disruptions in power supplies. The few broken overhead lines are promptly fixed by the repair crews.

The power grid companies comprising OAO "Center and North Caucasus IDC" and OAO "Caucasus Energy Management Company" are tightening the fire prevention measures near power transmission lines. Arrangements have been made to facilitate communications with fire fighting units, units of the Russian Ministry of Emergencies, territorial forestries, and local authorities.

In some areas, including Volgograd Region, Kursk Region, and Bryansk Region, the heat wave was followed by thunderstorms and gusty winds. In such conditions, OAO "Volgogradenergo", OAO "Kurskenergo", and OAO "Bryanskenergo" created emergency response centers and mixed repair teams. The repair teams managed to promptly restore power to most regions affected by the adverse weather conditions via back-up transmission lines.
