The Detsky Mir Group of Companies opens a store at the MEGA complex

The Detsky Mir network is set to open a store at the MEGA family retailing and entertainment complex on October 11, 2002. This project is an important step for the Detsky Mir Group of Companies in implementing its program for deploying a nationwide children’s goods retailing network and the company’s biggest project in 2003. The company is to put around $2 million into the project. According to Sergei Kushakov, head of the Detsky Mir Group of Companies, “The launch of a store at MEGA is our flagship project. On the area available to us, we have applied our novel own-brand conceptual approach to retailing of children’s goods. And we intend to replicate these techniques and this newly acquired experience on the scale of the city and the country at large.” The two-storied store organized on latter-day retailing principles has a floor space of 4,600 square meters and will sell leading domestic and foreign-made children’s goods brands, including toys, clothing, footwear, newborns’ essentials, and books. A playland, complete with Alpine cliffs, waterfalls, a jungle hut, and tropical vegetation, has been put on for the patrons’ small children. The store is scheduled to open in a festive ceremony at noon. The celebration program will continue on the Detsky Mir grounds through the rest of the day, culminating in stage performances in various genres, such as a stellar space extravaganza and dance show for the new store’s guests, a children’s disco, amusements and mock contests, dancing, magician’s tricks, circus numbers featuring exotic birds and monkeys, and much else. The guests invited to be in on the opening ceremony include officials and top officers of the Moscow Government’s Property Department, Sistema JSFC, the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, IKEA MOS, Jones Lang LaSalle, Penny Lane Realty and Sports Master companies, the Stores’ Store, children’s music composer Grigory Gladkov, TV anchor Yulia Bordovskikh, poet Larisa Rubalskaya, pop singers Anzhelika Varum and Leonid Agutin, film and theatre actors Alexander Lazarev and Svetlana Nemoliayeva, impersonator Nikolai Lukinsky, stage performers from Lenkom Theater, OSP-Studio, and many others. The Detsky Mir Group of Companies is the biggest Russian operator in the domestic retail market. In 2002, it posted sales of $52 million. Sistema JSFC has been its majority shareholder (with over 70% of its capital stock) since 1996. Another 19% of the Detsky Mir company is held by the Moscow Government. The Group’s core capital assets include the Detsky Mir department store (total area of 54,500 square meters), Europe’s biggest children’s goods outlet, in Lubyanka Square, which draws up to 60,000 customers every day. In 2002, the department store celebrated its 45 years on the children’s goods market. Recently, the Detsky Mir Group of Companies has been vigorously expanding its presence in the country’s outlying regions in a bid to develop it into a nationwide retail network. Its branches in Tambov and Orel have been successfully operating for some time already. The Group intends to have a regional network expanded to 60 stores by 2007.
