IDGC of Volga, PJSC (a member of Rosseti Group of Companies) implements a set of measures aimed at ensuring a stable electricity supply during the thunderstorm season. The power engineers analyze the surge-voltage protection systems of switchgear facilities of substations (SS) and overhead power lines (OHL), visual inspection of lightning protection devices. Based on the information collected, preparation of switchgears of 35–220 kV substations, 35–110 kV overhead lines, 6–10 kV distribution grids is being carried out. Ground wires damaged during the autumn-winter period 2016/2017 and their grounding schemes unearthed for melting the ice are being restored. When the soil is dry enough, specialists will measure resistance of grounding devices, check the condition of circuits between ground leads and groundable components of fuel and oil storage facilities. The staff attend extra scheduled briefings and learn safety rules for damages detection and elimination of failures occurred on substations and power transmission lines. Effective preparation for the thunderstorm season, performed in strict accordance with the requirements of regulatory and technical documentation and in a timely manner, is one of the most important areas in the work of power engineers. It allows minimizing the risks of breaking the stable operation of the power grid complex and uninterrupted power supply to consumers during the thunderstorm season.
