Moscow, 28 May 2004. There is a major flood – the worst one in the past four decades – on the Yenisey River, which was caused by the abnormally high temperatures in East Siberia between 16 and 24 May. Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP plays an important role in preventing the damage by the flood: the inflow rate in the area of the power plant has grown to 9,000 m3 per second.
The power plant's personnel were prepared to work in the high water conditions and have been able to ensure stable operation of the HPP and prevent the flooding of the population centers in Krasnoyarsk Kray downstream the Yenisey (Sizaya, Mayna, Karak, Letnik, Shushenskoe, Ilyichevo, Minusinsk, etc.). But for their efforts, Khakasia's capital Abakan could also have been struck by the flood.
